THE MORNING NIKE BROKE

On Monday, Nike slid below the $40 mark, a level it had defended for months, closing at its lowest point in more than a decade. This is not an obscure small cap. This is the swoosh, the brand that used to be shorthand for winning, now down close to 38 percent this year and nearly 78 percent off its 2021 all time high. The trigger was not even Nike's own news, a smaller rival's soft guidance was enough to send it tumbling, which tells you how fragile sentiment has become.

WHY THE SWOOSH STOPPED WORKING

Greater China revenue fell 11 percent, and digital sales there collapsed 29 percent, a core market turning its back on the brand just as local rivals get faster and cheaper. JPMorgan cut Nike to underweight and slashed its price target, warning the turnaround will cost more than investors have priced in. UBS piled on separately, flagging falling resale prices for Nike and Jordan sneakers, often an early tell that real demand is softer than official numbers suggest.

THE TURNAROUND THAT ISN'T TURNING

CEO Elliott Hill has reorganized roughly 8,000 employees into new sport focused teams and just brought in a new CFO from Pfizer. On paper it is the right shakeup. The problem is timing: management has guided for flat earnings through the first half of next fiscal year, corporate speak for "don't expect improvement soon." Investors reward proof, not promises, and the proof simply is not here yet.

THE LESSON HIDDEN IN THIS CHART

Stocks move through phases: a quiet base, a markup run like DBS and OCBC are enjoying now, a distribution top where smart money quietly exits, and finally decline, where support after support gives way. Nike is firmly in that last phase. Each broken level brought calls that it looked "oversold." The bounce never came. Cheap can always get cheaper, and a falling knife does not care how attractive the valuation looks on paper.

WHAT THIS MEANS BEYOND NIKE

While Nike was hitting a twelve year low, the S&P 500 sat near record highs with the VIX near its calmest readings all year. That is an uneasy combination: the broader market is pricing in very little risk even as individual pillars quietly crumble underneath it. With the Fed's next major signal due before month end, this is not the moment to assume everything is fine just because the headline index looks strong.
